The Public Service Vehicles (Lost Property) Regulations 1978
Lost something on one of our vehicles? Heres how the process works under the Public Service Vehicles (Lost Property) Regulations 1978.
These regulations apply to any item accidentally left on a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) such as a bus or coach. Items lost at bus stops, depots, or stations fall outside these rules and are handled under our own company policy.
Any property found on board
should be handed immediately to the driver.
At the end of each journey, the driver will carry out a search
of the vehicle for left-behind items.
All found items are stored securely in our lost-property office until claimed or disposed of in line with regulations.
We maintain a detailed log of all items found, including:
Description of the item
Where and when it was found
Name/contact details of the claimant (if known)
Final outcome (returned, disposed of, etc.)
Records are kept for a minimum of 12 months.
To reclaim an item, the owner must provide sufficient proof of ownership (e.g., description, identification, unique details).
Items are returned free of charge, although standard retrieval fees (set by the regulations) may apply depending on the item type and value.
Standard items: Kept for up to 1 month.
Perishable items: May be disposed of after 48 hours.
Hazardous or objectionable items: May be disposed of immediately.
If unclaimed after the retention period, items may be sold, donated, recycled, or disposed of in line with PSV regulations.
The regulations allow operators to apply standard retrieval fees for claimed items. Charges vary depending on the type and value of the item (e.g., small items, clothing, valuables, money). These fees help cover administration and storage.
We are not liable for items lost on the vehicle, but we follow all legal steps to store and return property when found.
Items lost away from the vehicle (e.g., at stops or roadside pick-up points) are not covered by PSV lost property regulations
